T2W1 Journal Writing: Earth Hour

Hi everyone,

The holidays are over and now it is back to school again. Hope you had a restful break. For this week's journal writing, I would like you to reflect on a coming global event : Earth Hour. This year, Singapore is participating in this global effort.

To learn more about this event, you can visit these websites:

To help you with the reflection, I have listed some questions below:
1. What is Earth Hour?
2. When is it held this year?
3. Why do you think people are organising this event?
4. What will everyone be doing during Earth Hour?
5. What other activities can you organise with your family and friends during Earth Hour?
6. What are the other problems the Earth is facing?
7. Could you propose some solutions to ONE of the problems which you have highlighted?

I hope that all of you play your part in making our planet a conducive and safe place in which to live. :)

  3. Earth hour is just like saving electricity or energy. It is held this year because the government wants to save electricity because the electricity bills are very high.People organise this event to keep the eclectricity bills down.People will begin to save electricity by closing lights and fans when it is not in use and open it when it is in use.
The Earth is facing air pollution, water pollution and littering on the grass or floors. To prevent it from happening,we must not litter on the floors and grass or anywhere in the Earth except the dustbins...

  12. Earth hour is when people from all over the world switch off their light for an hour on the 28th of March, 8.30PM.

By switching off your lights, it will determine official government policies to take action against global warming.

Some other problems the Earth is facing are things such as air pollution, water pollution, etc.
    People should not pollute
    rivers and seas.
Factories should take into consideration on how much air pollution they are causing.
Drivers should use a better petrol as the cheap petrol in which many people use is contirbuting to air pollution.
i'll take part in it :)
    yeah, thats it :D

Earth Hour 2009 aims to reach more than 1000000 people in Singapore, inviting communities, business and governments to switch off lights for 1 hour and send a powerful global message that we need to take action on climate change.
I think that it is hosted to tell everyone the importance of global warming.
People will be off their lights when their offices are empty to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
Another problem earth is facing is the ozone depletion

  17. I think that Earth Hour is a day that everyone should save the electricity. According to the research,Earth Hour is held in the 28 of March this year.I think that the people is organising this event is because that many people is wasting electricity.Everyone will be trying not to wast electricity during Earth Hour. The Earth is facing problems such as people littering sweet wrapers in to the floor.I think the solution to this problem is to make more the policemen patrol the area more often and storing a camera(CCTV)in the lift so that the resident living nearby will not litter.

During Earth hour, we turn off the lights and fans to save electricity for one hour.I think Earth hour is important as it teaches us to conserve electricity .During earth hour, I think my family and I would use candles for our lights. The earth faces many problems, such as people wasting electricity by spending it on unimportant things. For example, turning on the air-con when you can on the fan. I hope everyone will learn to save the world from global warming!

  34. Earth Hour is an hour where we have an election between Earth and global warming. It is held on the 28th of March, 9.30pm in S'pore. I think people are organizing the event to let people take part in an election between Saving the Earth or just leaving it and let Earth burn into a crisp.Everyone will be turning their lights off during Earth Hour and Channel NewsAsia will be turning their channel off during that hour too! I can just you know, sit down and do nothing.:) Earth is also facing pollution, deforestation and extinction. We could try creating other materials to substitute the natural materials that are more than 70% environmentally-friendly. For example, instead of using paper we could use a portable whiteboard(the double-sided ones we have in school.) And a marker instead of paper and pencils which are made of wood. Or maybe having laptops instead!!!Laptops are environmentally-friendly in a way...(Except they use electricity which comes from fuels!!!)

  39. Earth hour is an hour where we have to switch off our unused electric appliances. The next Earth Hour will take place on 28 february 2009,8.30p.m at local time.We do this to cut down the amount of electricity we use for that hour to show some respect to mother nature. When we cut down the electricity we use,we need less electricity. Thus, the power stations would not have to burn so many fossil fuels which will not have as much air pollution as before.I am taking part in the Earth Hour event.

  41. Earth hour is an hour where everyone switches off their lights. It is held on 28th of March, this year, from 8.30p.m to 9.30p.m. I do not know what others did during the earth hour, but my family turned off all the lights when we visited my granny’s house and decorated it with candles. Wow! The whole place did look great! I think Earth is also facing other problems like global warming and deforestation. I think we could solve these problems by having a Earth hour every three months, perhaps? It would not help very much if it is one person doing that, but if the whole world is doing that, that would greatly solve the global warming problem! I hope that everyone will play a part in preventing global warming as this is our Earth!

  42. Earth Hour?? What is that? I don't know...

Ha! That was before! Now, it will be the after.

    AFTER:
I experienced Earth Hour that time. Hey, it was so exciting! Glowing in the dark... However, 1 hour passed so quickly. And the hour is "bye-bye".

My father actually was at Singapore at that time. Usually, he is at Indonesia, working of course! My father and I were watching TV, my mother... Hey! Why must I write so much?

I thought "Earth Hour" is a programme which don't allow people to turn on anything that uses electricity. I was wrong, totally wrong... That's dissapointing (of course!)! However, now I know that Earth Hour may allow people to turn on their lights, however, they're ENCOURAGING them to turn off any electrical objects that produces electricity.

My father made a great point. He says, in Chinese in addition to English and Indonesian Language, "Computers should not be allowed to be turned on, since it creates heat." Actually, everything should be turned off, so no heat is produced. Is it? Of course not! The air we exhale also produces heat. If people were to stop breathing, then during that very very short hour, many corpses may be found. Brrr...!

So, 5 hours before Earth Hour, my father suggested, "We will go for a walk, anywhere we like." Yes, the same thing, Chinese in addition to English and Indonesian Language. But, we did not go out, according to Paragraph 4, I... I'm not writing it!

So, next year, another experience on Earth Hour will start! So, keep it going, Earth!

    That's all!
